Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s men’s team consultant for the first round of the T20 World Cup, starting on October 17. Sri Lanka are part of the first round where they are grouped with the Netherlands, Ireland and Namibia – two out of who will qualify for the Super 12s.
Jayawardene, who is already in UAE as the head coach of Mumbai Indians, will join the Sri Lankan team via a bubble-to-bubble transfer immediately after the IPL, which concludes on October 14. Sri Lanka will have his services for a seven-day period between October 16 and 23.
Jayawardene has also accepted the role of being a consultant and mentor for Sri Lanka’s U-19 side in the lead-up to the next year’s World Cup in West Indies. An official SLC statement said that his five-month role with the U19 side will be performed in an ‘honorary’ capacity.
