Jofra Archer to miss entire IPL 2021

Rajasthan Royals’ ace pacer Jofra Archer will miss the entire Indian Premier League 2021, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Friday (April 23). Archer underwent surgery on his middle finger and only just returned to “bowling this week with higher intensity, and the ECB and Sussex medical teams will continue to monitor his progress,” the ECB said in a statement.

“Archer will now step up his training regime starting next week and will be in full training with Sussex. It is expected that he will return to cricket in the next fortnight if he can continue to bowl and prepare pain-free,” the release further added.

It will come as a huge blow to RR, for whom Archer was stellar last season. Despite the wooden-spoon finish, Archer finished as the MVP in 2020 for having picked 20 wickets in 14 games, with an economy of 6.55 and having had scored 113 runs.

If Archer was to come to the IPL, he would’ve had to serve a mandatory seven-day quarantine period that would interrupt his preparation and bowling build-up, not ideal in his return to competition. Both the Royals and Archer came to the decision mutually.

The ECB will confirm Archer’s return to playing in due course. It is hoped that he will play a second XI match in the next fortnight to assess his return from injury. If all goes to plan, he will play mid-May for Sussex in the Championship.

Rassie van der Dussen expected to join Rajasthan Royals

Cricbuzz understands that South Africa batsman Rassie van der Dussen is expected to join the RR camp as a top-up player, subject to visa clearance. The 32-year-old will help embolden the batting in the absence of Ben Stokes, who was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger, and Liam Livingstone, who returned home citing bubble fatigue.

If van der Dussen makes it to India, it will be his first brush with the IPL. He’s appeared in 126 T20s so far, scoring 3,824 runs at a strike-rate of 131.31.
